Hearing Aid Batteries

Hearing aid batteries come in four main sizes, identified by their color-coded packaging:

  • Size 10 (yellow)
  • Size 13 (orange)
  • Size 312 (brown)
  • Size 675 (blue)

The appropriate battery size depends on the size and style of your hearing aid. Most standard hearing aid batteries are zinc-air, which are activated upon exposure to air. To maintain their charge, always keep them sealed in their original packaging until needed, and avoid transferring them to other containers. Never use batteries from packages with a broken seal, as they may already be depleted.

Battery Tips

  • After removing the tab, allow the battery about 5 minutes to activate before closing the battery compartment.
  • Do not force the battery door shut or open too far, as this may damage the hearing aid or its compartment. Ensure the battery is correctly inserted if the door doesn’t close properly.
  • Dispose of used batteries promptly and safely, as they can pose risks to children and pets if ingested.
  • A multicleaning tool with a magnetic tip can be useful for handling batteries with ease.

How Do I Change My Batteries?

There are a few ways to know when to change batteries. Some hearing aids will emit a small beeping sound when the battery is low, while some will speak to the user, stating that a change of batteries is needed. Hearing aids that don’t emit warnings typically worsen in sound quality, become distorted, or simply die altogether. The hearing aids may become more quiet before the batteries die — an indication that it’s time to change them.

Note: If a change of batteries does not alleviate this problem, the device may be damaged, and it should be looked at by a hearing care provider.
